New Haven Green's a Great Place

You know great places when you see them and apparently the New Haven Green is on top.

The non-profit group, the American Planning Association has chosen the spot as a great "public space."

Some of the reasons why:

• the location was established in 1641 as the marketplace of the Puritans' New Haven Colony
• General George Washington spoke there during the American Revolution
• the Amistad captives were exercised here
• Abraham Lincoln gave a campaign speech at the location

According to the American Planning Association Web site, it "celebrates places of exemplary character, quality and planning. 

The planners select sites every year that represent the gold standard in terms of having a true sense of place, cultural and historical interest, community involvement and a vision for tomorrow.

Also making the top 10: The Squares of Savannah, Lincoln Park in Chicago and Central Square in Keene, New Hampshire.
