Rain Doesn't Dampen Hartford Marathon Runners' Spirits

It was wet and rainy, but the weather didn't deter runners hitting the pavement for the 21st running of the NU Hartford Marathon.

From the start,15,000 runners were determined to finish. They lined up on Capitol Avenue wearing multi- colored shirts and garbage bags to keep dry.

“Thousands of thousands of people. It’s like a sea of humanity everyone’s happy everyone’s excited,” said race director Beth Shluger.

Kimberly Markey, a mom from Berlin and a also cancer survivor, ran the full marathon.

“It’s a big deal for me to finish the Hartford Marathon not only will it be my 16th full marathon, but it will be my first marathon after finishing 19 out of 19 breast cancer treatments,” she said.

Race organizers estimated there were at least 30,000 spectators.

There was a 5K, half marathon, and the 26.2 mile course that winded through Hartford, East Hartford and South Windsor.
