Waterbury police have made a second arrest in connection to a hit-and-run that killed a 90-year-old woman with dementia.
Days after charging the suspected driver, police arrested the man accused of helping him conceal the crime.
Around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, police responded to Highland and Bradley avenues and found Nella Atkins suffering from injuries sustained after being struck by a motor vehicle.
She was transported to Waterbury Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
Days later, police arrested Marc Santos,18, of Waterbury, after detectives received a tip that he was involved in the fatal crash. When interviewed by police, Santos admitted to being the driver of the car that struck and killed Atkins, police said.
Waterbury police have also arrested Juan Sanchez, 21, of Waterbury and charged him with tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution in the third degree.
Police said Sanchez allowed Santos to hide the car in his garage at 200 Plaza Ave. and assisted concealing the crime by helping Santos replace the broken windshield and then disposing of it.

Police took Sanchez into custody on Monday night and he was released on a $50,000 bond. He will appear in court on Sept. 4.
It appears that Atkins, who suffered from dementia, had wandered away from her home late on the Friday night or early on Saturday morning, police said.
