Socialite Swipes $11,000 Scarf: Cops

Beata Boman appears at New York gala hours after being charged.

A New York socialite known for smooching royalty is accused of swiping a fur-lined scarf worth $11,000 from the upscale Greenwich store, Richards of Greenwich.

Beata Boman, 38, a Polish-born self-described former model and fashion designer, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon outside the store, according to a report from Greenwich police.

The head of security from Richards noticed followed Boman onto Greenwich Avenue around 3:45 p.m. and gave police information on where they could find her, according to the police report.

Boman admitted to police that she took the scarf and said she planned to return it, according to the police report. What kind of scarf was taken, police did not know.

It appears that the arrest did not detract Boman from social activities. She was photographed at the amFar Inspirational Gala in New York on Tuesday at the Museum of Modern Art.

Boman made news in Britain in August 2008 when photographs were published in the Daily Mail of her affectionate kiss with Prince Andrew in St. Tropez, the Greenwich Time reports.

Boman’s photo is frequently in the society pages and on Web sites, including the New York Social Diary, Hampton Sheet and others.

On her Facebook page, Bowman describes herself as an ex-model who studied economics but is now a "very happy and proud fashion designer" of the "beatab" line.

The Associated Press was not able to reach Boman for comment on Tuesday and there was no listing for her in New York.

She was charged with first-degree larceny and released after posting a $5,000 surety bond. She is scheduled to make her first appearance in Superior Court in Stamford on Monday.
