Connecticut is making funds available to groups willing to build supportive housing for homeless youths.
State officials say there's an estimated 3,000 unaccompanied youth in Connecticut, under the age of 25, experiencing homelessness.
Under this program, the state is making available $12 million in bonding through the Department of Housing for groups that will build supportive housing units for youths 18-to-24 years old. In addition, there is approximately $3 million set aside to pay for 10 years of operating expenses at these facilities.
An additional $175,000 per year, for the next decade, is also being provided by DOH and the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
Applications for the funding will be accepted beginning Jan. 25. DOH has a goal of ending youth homelessness in Connecticut by 2020.
