Student, Friend Accused of Assault, Attempted Robbery at University of New Haven

A University of New Haven student and one of his friends have been arrested after another student reported they assaulted him and tried to force him to withdraw money from an ATM on campus on Sunday evening.

One of the suspects, identified as Rahik Harris, 18, of Rockaway, New York, is a University of New Haven student, while the other, Mahlik Elliot, 19, of Floral Park,New York,is the suspect’s friend from New York and does not attend University of New Haven student, police said.

The suspects are accused of assaulting a University of New Haven student in his dorm and forcing him to walkl to an ATM and withdraw money they believed they were owed, according to West haven police.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. and the victim was able to run away from the assailants before getting to the ATM and get to campus police to report what happened, according to University of New Haven police.

Both suspects were charged with robbery, assault and criminal trespass and held on bond at the West Haven Police Department until their court appearance Monday. They have since been released after posting their bond.

Elliott's grandfather declined to go on camera Monday, but told NBC Connecticut, "He's a good kid."

University students learned about the arrests in an email from the University of New Haven chief of police.

“This is a good system that they have. My parents also get emails when we have large enough emergencies and we can get text messages as well," University of New Haven freshman Chris DeAngelis said.

Both suspects' cases were continued to Dec. 7. No details were read in court about the incident.
