Winter's Record Snow Brings Big Business for Roofers

With winter gone, family call in experts to make repairs.

Damage from near-record snowfalls over the winter has created a business boom for roofers in Connecticut.

Ice dams caused water to leak into houses, causing damage for many. It also weighed down houses, causing several roof collapses.

Matthew Morrissey, owner of Morrissey Roofing, worked for 45 straight days over the winter clearing snow off roofs and he’s been booked for the past four weeks with roof repairs.

“It’s still April. It ain’t even roofing season,” said Morrissey, who estimates his business has doubled for the past month.

Morrissey’s crew spent Monday replacing Amarjit Buttar’s roof. The job will cost Buttar $12,000.

“I have to live and I’ve lived in this house for 33 years,” Buttar said. “I didn’t have a choice.”

Marcus Keilch, the foreman on the project, he hopes to finish the work in one day and then move on to the next project.

“Everyone needs a new roof or thinks they need a new roof,” Keilch said. “Everyone’s roof leaked. Everyone had ice dams. So it’s been great.”
