THE RIDGE-LINE: They say he's one of the most unique singer/songwriters in American indie music. They say he has an unforgettable "adenoidal vocal delivery" (that means nasally right?) that will make you think of those old gangster movies of the '30s. But they also say he's one of the best storytellers in the businesses. For thirty years, Stan Ridgway has been pouring out his soul in emotionally revealing music. Tonight, you can check him out at the Fairfield Theatre Company at StageOne. Tickets are $35. the show starts at 7:30 p.m.
ONLY IN THE IVY: Head to Yale tonight for a one-of-a-kind-in-CT musical event. Herrsällskapet, or "The Gentlemen´s Society" in Swedish, will perform. The group of twelve singers from the town of Gävle, Sweden will put on a program of sacred and secular Scandinavian choral music. The group has performed all over the world, and has even put out their very own Swedish Christmas album. Tonight's concert is free. You don't even need tickets. The show starts at 8:30.
ART IN TANDEM: The Widener Gallery, which is part of the Trinity College Austin Arts Center in Hartford, opens a new exhibit today featuring a pair of artists. Painter and print-maker Nathan Margalit bases his paintings and collages on something called the encaustic technique. Basically, that means he uses color pigments mixed with hot wax and resin. This apparently becomes part of the display as well as helping adhere other elements to the canvas. Joe Smith on the other hand, uses a technique that lives more in the construction, using things you'd find more in a hardware store rather than an art supply store. The Margalit and Smith show runs through Oct. 14.
