Police Chase Ends In Deadly Crash in North Haven

Multi-Town Chase Started in New Haven

State and local police are investigating a car chase that turned deadly Saturday morning in North Haven.

The chase started in New Haven around 1:00 a.m. when police in that city responded to a report of a stabbing near Butta J's Cafe on Ashmun Street.

When police arrived, they were approached by a woman who had been stabbed, and provided police with a description of the suspect and the vehicle he was driving.  It is not known if the woman was injured in this incident or a separate altercation.

New Haven Police soon spotted the vehicle, a black 2005 Jeep Liberty bearing CT registration 462WVC, on Dixwell Avenue.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle when the suspect attempted to flee the scene, hitting an officer in leg and striking a police cruiser in the process, according to a State Police report.

A chase ensued that stretched through Hamden and into North Haven where the suspect failed to negotiate a curve striking a guardrail, then a tree on Upper State Street.

The suspect, and sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.   He was been identified as Troy Rigsbee, 23, New Haven.

The woman who was stabbed was treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital and released.   The New Haven officer suffered only minor injuries and has been released from the hospital.

The vehicle involved is registered to a Ronald Jones, 53, New Haven.  It is not clear why Rigsbee was behind the wheel.

State Police are continuing the investigation.
