School Bus Strike Could Cripple Classes

Drivers may picket as early as Thursday

School buses could remain parked if school bus drivers and the bus company do not soon come to an agreement. The First Student bus company and school bus drivers from Lisbon, Franklin, Lebanon, Sprague and Bozrah are in a dispute that could result in a strike.

Supt. Dr. Mary Lou Bargnesi sent a letter home to parents in Bozrah, telling them that as early as Thursday drivers could walk.

“We are hopeful that our bus company, First Student, will either be able to resolve the issues with their drivers, or to provide us with substitute drivers should there actually be a strike,” Dr. Bargnesi told parents.

The bus company said the buses will be running through the week and talks will happen on Saturday.

If the bus drivers strike, parents in Lisbon said, they’ll need to find a way to get their children to school.

“My wife would have to figure something out,” parent Bill Avery said. “I don’t know. We got her grandparents and stuff like that.”

Dr. Bargnesi told parents that students aren’t allowed to walk to school and that if parents can’t find a ride for their children for the time being, it’s OK.

“Any child who is not able to attend during the period we are open without transportation will not in any way be penalized for absenteeism. We have requested that teachers provide for any child who is not able to attend,” Bargnesi said.
