Woman Battles Breast Cancer Twice by Age 27

Tara Piers of Plainville, 27, has a lot to live for.  She’s in the process of planning her wedding.  But this happy time was recently overshadowed by cancer.

"They found calcifications.  So immediately upset very upset but still hoping it would be nothing," Piers said.

Tara battled breast cancer for the first time back in 2006 when she was just 23 years old.

"I felt a lump actually," she said.

She fended off the cancer with chemo and a mastectomy on one side.  Since then, doctors have monitored her closely.

"I asked for every six months either a mammogram or MRI and that's how they've been following me."

But a couple months ago a mammogram found something of concern.  There were calcifications on the breast unaffected by cancer the first time around.  Tests revealed the cancer was back and Tara would need a mastectomy to remove her other breast.

"Now having a mastectomy with both breasts gone I really don’t have to worry anymore," she said.

Now she’s focusing her energy on moving forward with her own life and working to find a cure for breast cancer.  She’s rallying support for Komen for a Cure.  Specifically, Tara has a team participating in the Race for the Cure Saturday, June 5 at Bushnell Park.  Additionally, Wood N’ Tap in Southington will donate 10 percent of every check on Monday, June 14 to Komen.

"I want to live to see the day when no one has to worry about breast cancer ever because  I wouldn't want to see my friend or my sister or my children go through that," Piers said.
