DMV Express Center to Open at Bank in Milford

The center will open at Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union in Milford

DMV, and express. These are two words you may not think go together.

But that's the goal of a new Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles program in Milford. It's part of the agency’s effort to cut down on wait times that the NBC Connecticut Troubleshooters have investigated for years.

This week the agency will open an “Express” location inside a Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union on the Boston Post Road in Milford.

“We knew this would be important. Certainly customers in New Haven and Fairfield counties really really need this additional location,” said DMV Commissioner Michael Bzdyra.

A year and a half ago, the DMV stopped working with AAA offices serving the state’s southernmost counties. Now the DMV has found a new partner in the Nutmeg Credit Union.

Plans to open more DMVExpress locations are in the works. The sites offer limited DMV services, focusing primarily on driver licenses.

If you use the DMV Express Branch and you don’t belong to the credit union, there is a $5 “convenience” fee.

Chris Bee of East Haven said that isn’t a problem.

“It’s all about money and time at the end of the day. You know take the people out of here and bring them somewhere else, saving time and money,” he said.

“Our intent is to offer convenience through technology whether you are doing your banking or renewing your license. We have always been dedicated to providing outstanding service and convenience for our members and will offer that same commitment to the DMV experience,” Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union President and CEO John Holt said in a statement.

The following services will be provided at the location:

  • Verified Driver’s License Renewals (U.S. Citizens Only)
  • Regular Driver’s License Renewals
  • Verified ID Card Renewals (U.S. Citizens Only)
  • Regular ID Card Renewals
  • Duplicate Driver’s Licenses, ID Cards, and Learner’s Permits
  • Name Changes on Driver’s Licenses, ID Cards and Learner's Permits

The Milford DMV Express Center will be open every Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

The office will not process commercial driver licenses, licenses with endorsements/restrictions for public passengers, suspended drivers’ licenses, and “Drive Only” license services.

Eligible customers at the Milford location will also be given the opportunity to register to vote.

There is also a DMV Express at West Haven City Hall.

DMV services are still available at AAA offices in the northern half of Connecticut. They still have a relationship with the agency.
