Suspect in Seymour Crash That Killed 20-Year-Old Arrested

A 24-year-old Bridgeport man has been charged in connection with a crash in Seymour that killed one 20-year-old man and sent five others to the hospital last year

Nathan Torres, 24, of Bridgeport, turned himself in to police on Friday. Police said he was selling drugs in Beacon Falls, just over the Seymour line, moments before the crash around 9:30 p.m. on April 11, 2017.

A 20-year-old Derby man, Shyheim Samuel, was killed and five other people were taken to local hospitals after the crash, which brought down live wires.

The other victims ranged in age from 14 to 22.

Neighbors reported hearing several people screaming and trying to escape from the car, but they had to tell them not to move because the crash brought down live power lines.

Police said Torres was speeding and operating the car under the influence alcohol and drugs. The 24-year-old's Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) revealed he was one and a half times over the legal limit and found marijuana in his system.

In addition to the crash arrest, police had a second warrant for Torres because investigators found he conducted an illegal drug deal moments before the accident in Beacon Falls, just over the Seymour town line.

Combined, Torres faces charges that include manslaughter while intoxicated, assault with a motor vehicle, risk of injury to a minor, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, illegal sale of drugs and driving without a license.
