Man Killed, 5 Hospitalized After Car Crashes into Pole in Seymour

A 20-year-old man was killed and five other people are in local hospitals after a speeding car crashed into a pole on Rimmon Street in Seymour, bringing down live wires, just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

A sedan carry six Derby and Bridgeport residents was traveling south on Rimmon Street when it crashed into a utility pole, taking down the pole and live wires, according to police.

Neighbors reported hearing several people screaming and trying to escape from the car, but they had to tell them not to move because the crash brought down live power lines.

One passenger was killed and police have identified him as Shyheim Samuel, of Derby. He turned 20 on Monday. Authorities believe he was a passenger in the back of the vehicle.

The other occupants of the vehicle are being treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital. Police said most of the injuries are serious, but not life-threatening.

None of the other victims have been identified, but police said they range in age from 14 to 22. Three are males and three are females.

Police said speed appears to be a factor in the crash, but they are still investigating the cause. They also said they seized evidence from around the vehicle, but have not said what it was.

Eversource crews were called to the scene after live wires landed on the car.

Authorities warn that Rimmon Street could be closed until noon.

Power was out for hundreds of people in Seymour but has been restored to most Eversource customers.

Editor's Note: The Associated Press earlier reported that everyone in the car was at teen.
