Parts of downtown New London were evacuated and power out to thousands after a gas leak in the area of Bank and State streets Wednesday.

Mayor Michael Passero tweeted that construction crews cut a gas line at 11 Bank St. around 3 p.m. Crews responded to repair the line and clear gas from multiple affected buildings.

Eversource responded and shut off gas and power in the area, affecting more than 8,400 customers, to make repairs.

As of 4:15 p.m., the evacuation order was lifted and power was restored. No one was hurt.
