Human remains have been found in the debris of a Hampton home after a fire this morning, according to state police.
Early Thursday morning, fire broke out at 33 Eleventh Section Road, a two-story home.
The fire department was alerted when a resident from the next street over called them after hearing banging and popping noises, then looking out his window and seeing the fire
Hampton Fire Chief Noel Waite said the house was engulfed when he arrived. The second floor and roof had already collapsed and the first floor was consumed by fire.
Firefighters said it was a challenge to get water to the scene because it is a rural area, but the fire has been knocked down.
The fire marshal has been called in to help with the investigation.
This morning, fire officials said they were told that one person was home when the fire started.
After the fire was extinguished, human remains were recovered from inside the residence, according to state police.
"This is a horrific tragedy," Allan Cahill, First Selectman of Hampton, said. "This very small community will bind together to weather this sad loss."
Local
Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit detectives and Connecticut State Police Eastern District Major Crime detectives also responded to the scene and are assisting the Hampton Fire Marshal with the investigation.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct a post-mortem examination to determine positive identify of the victim, and cause and manner of death.
This fire remains under investigation.
