Police Arrest Passenger After Chase on I-84

Police said he was in a stolen car.

State police arrested an 18-year-old Hartford man after a police chase from Southington into New Britain that ended on Interstate 84 and they are still looking for the driver.

State police said Southington police officers were pursuing a stolen blue Volkswagen Jetta, but ended the chase just after 2 a.m.

Soon after, the vehicle was spotted on I-84 East in New Britain, driving eraatically and cutting around tractor-trailers. Police then put down stops ticks, which deflated two of the tires, but the driver went over them and kept going, according to police.

Soon after, police boxed the Jetta in and the driver struck a police cruiser twice and rammed the driver's side door, then got out of the car, jumoed a jersey barrier and landed 30 feet below, police said.

Troopers did not find the driver, but took the passenger, Luis Ivan Diaz, 18, of Hartford, into custody.

Diaz was charged with third-degree larceny of a motor vehicle, interfering with an officer and conspiracy.

He was held on $10,000 bond.
