But now a Connecticut school district is considering a plan to celebrate two Muslim holidays.
Woodland Regional High School sophomore Shipoyn Rifati is asking Region 16 school district not to hold classes on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
Eid al-Fitr ends the fasting period of Ramadan, a holy month in which Muslims fast from sunrise to sundown to mark the time when Allah sent the Angel Gabriel to Muhammad in Mecca and gave him the teachings of the Quran.
Eid al-Adha concludes the annual observance of the pilgrimage to Mecca, known as hajj.
The school board that represents Prospect and Beacon Falls is expected to take up the proposal this week.
About 6 percent of the student population at Woodland Regional is Muslim. That's about 20 to 25 students.
