Six Swine Flu Cases Scare Waterbury Parents

Six cases of swine flu in Waterbury schools have parents on edge.

Thursday, school officials were already answering questions from concerned parents about four confirmed cases when another two cases were confirmed, according to the Waterbury Republican-American.

That prompted the school to post an announcement on the district Web site about what they are doing.

The school department is getting guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and the city’s health department on action to take, according to an announcement posted on the Waterbury Public School’s Web site.

“At this time, we are being advised that this strain of the flu is less dangerous than was originally feared, with symptoms much like the common flu.  Federal and state health officials continue to advise against school closings,” Supt. David L. Snead wrote in the announcement.

Cases have been confirmed in the district's three middle schools, Chase Elementary School, Wendell Cross Elementary School and Crosby High School, the Republican-American reports.

“Please rest assured we are taking precautions as a school district, but that the best precaution is that individuals use good personal hygiene and wash their hands frequently.  Parents, please keep your child home if he or she exhibits any flu-like symptoms,” he wrote.

As of Thursday, eight of thestate’s 102 cases have been in Waterbury.
