Springfield's Officer's Gun Missing from His Hartford Home

A Springfield police officer is facing possible disciplinary action after reporting that his service firearm is missing from his Connecticut apartment.

A spokesman for Commissioner William Fitchet told The Republican that Officer Kevin Merchant attended a four-hour disciplinary hearing on Wednesday but no decision on what, if any, punishment he will receive has been made. That process could take seven to 10 days. Merchant remains on normal duty status.

Hartford, Connecticut, police said they responded to Merchant's home on Oct. 15 for a report of a missing or stolen firearm. The gun went missing during off-duty hours.

Lt. Brian Foley said the gun has not been recovered and the case remains open.
