Vigil to Remember Murder Victim

48 year-old David Lays was shot and killed in front of 17 Oak Street Thursday night.

New Britain residents and local faith communities gathered on Oak Street Saturday afternoon to remember a father of four who was gunned down Thursday night.

This is the city's first murder of the year. Dozens of candles and pictures of 48 year-old David Lays, were placed in his honor. He lived in the area his entire life.

Police said David Lays was shot multiple times around 9:30 p.m. He was taken to the Hospital of Central Connecticut where he later died from his wounds. Police do not believe this was a random shooting.

New Britain Police Commissioner Bridget Brown participated in the rally and said she wants people that live on Oak Street to feel safe. She urges the community to participate in the cities neighborhood revitalization meetings that gather once a month.

Lays' family and the community want an end to the violence in New Britain and hope that his murder is solved soon.

Anyone with information is asked to call the New Britain Police Department at 860-826-3000.
