A $3B Piece of the Federal Pie

How would you spend $3 billion dollars?

That's the amount the state of Connecticut could receive under the federal economic stimulus bill. And right now. Gov. M. Jodi Rell's office is whittling down the list of eligible projects.  So far, the wish list projects that made the first cut were deemed more shovel ready than others and duplicate projects were tossed out.

So here's the state's breakdown:

  • $302 million for "shovel ready" highway and bridge work
  • $137 million for mass transit projects
  • $136 million for special education
  • $97 million for school districts (with low-income students)

The project-by-project breakdown is posted online.

Officials estimate that as many as 41,000 jobs statewide could be created by stimulus spending.
