A Fairfield boater who disappeared off the coast of Westport on Tuesday night was found dead at Cockenoe Bay and an autopsy revealed the man's death is a suicide.
Westport and Fairfield police found the boater's rowing skull on the Cockenoe Island beach and then discovered the body of William Supone, 61, of Fairfield, in the Cockenoe Bay mud flats while searching the area on foot. He was pronounced dead at the scene and the medical examiner determine he died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.
According to the Connecticut Post, Supone's wife reported him missing when he failed to return home from a boating trip on Tuesday night.
Fairfield police contacted the Westport Police Department on Tuesday, April 14 at 8:50 p.m. to alert them about a missing person investigation in their town.
After searching places Supone regularly visited, police found his car at Burying Hill Beach in Westport.
Fairfield police spokesman Lt. James Perez said on Tuesday night that Supone's cellphone was pinging from the area of the island.
The Coast Guard sent a helicopter out to search for Supone and assist police from Fairfield, Norwalk and Westport.
