Family Displaced After Escaping Vernon Fire

A fire that started in a Vernon garage on Saturday has displaced a family of four, according to the American Red Cross.

A cardboard box caught fire in a garage at the house and the flames spread. A family living at 39 Rambling Road was home when structure fire broke out at 1:45 p.m., but they were able to escape without injury, police said.

Vernon and area firefighters extinguished the blaze, which "caused extensive damage to the home," according Lt. William Meier, of the Vernon Police Department.

The Red Cross is providing two adults and two children in the family with temporary housing, food and clothing and gave a stuffed animal to one of the child.

The Vernon fire marshal's office and police detectives are investigating the cause of the fire and the case remains open.
