The commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard said a new museum dedicated to the maritime service's history could help bring about a renaissance for New London.
Officials announced on Friday that the 50,000-square-foot National Coast Guard Museum will be built on the city's waterfront next to a downtown ferry landing.
Adm. Robert J. Papp Jr. said in comments reported by The Day of New London that he hopes the museum will help local businesses thrive and the city might see a renaissance.
The National Coast Guard Museum Association is raising money to build the facility, which is expected to cost between $80 million and $100 million.
New London has ties to the Coast Guard dating back centuries and is home to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
