Durham Fire Sparked by Attempt to Thaw Frozen Pipe

Fire broke out Tuesday afternoon at an equipment storage facility in Durham when a worker used a torch to thaw a frozen pipe, according to the fire chief on scene.

Footage from the scene shows heavy smoke and significant damage to the building at 74 Airline Drive. The complex houses the Perma Treat Corporation, a company that produces railroad ties.

Crews said flames broke out around 3 p.m. Fire engines were still arriving at the scene as of 5 p.m.

The fire does not appear to have spread to other buildings in the complex. It's not clear whether anyone was hurt.

No additional information was immediately available.
