State's extreme hot weather protocol is extended through Friday

NBC Universal, Inc.

Gov. Ned Lamont said the state is extending its extreme hot weather protocol through Friday evening.

The protocol started Tuesday at noon and will now remain in effect through Friday at 8 p.m.

Dozens of schools dismissed students early on Wednesday due to the hot temperatures and some plan to dismiss students early Thursday as well. For a full list of schools dismissing early, click here.

The protocol was initially going to end Thursday evening. Temperatures have reached the 90s for a second day in a row. If the heat continues into tomorrow, we'll officially be in a heat wave.

The purpose of the protocol is to make sure the most vulnerable populations get protection from the hot conditions.

Cooling centers are also open statewide. Anyone who needs help finding one can call 211. The list of cooling centers in the state can also be found here.

Some tips for beating the heat include:

  • Keeping your body temperature cool to avoid heat-related illnesses
  • Staying in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible
  • Limiting outdoor activity to the morning and evening
  • Avoiding direct sunlight
  • Wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing
  • Taking cool showers or baths
  • Staying hydrated by drinking more water than usual
