Honoring Our Veterans

"Remember them."

"Don't forget them."

"They made the ultimate sacrifice."

Those were the words spoken by U.S. Navy World War II veteran Ray Lavendier, of Farmington, Tuesday while he attended a ceremony in West Hartford. It was just one of many events taking place around the state this Veterans Day.

Joe Algiere, a World War II Army veteran, said it's important  that all Americans on this day appreciate and, as he put it, look up to the veterans, as they were doing Tuesday.

In Manchester, the Park Street Bridge was renamed in honor of veterans and will now be called the Veterans Memorial Bridge.  It's also being renovated at a cost of $1.4-milliion, most of it funded through a federal grant.

And at the Col. Gates Veterans Cemetery at the Veterans Home in Rocky Hill, Gov. M. Jodi Rell said she plans to establish an official State Veterans Memorial.
