Man Pistol-Whipped in Would-Be Carjacking in New Haven

A 23-year-old New Haven man was pistol-whipped during an attempted carjacking in New Haven late Monday night, police said.

Police responded to Grand Avenue near the Poplar Street intersection the incident reported by Old Lopez.

Lopez said two men approached him while he was stopped at the intersection. One was wielding a black or silver handgun.

The two men tried to steal his Volkswagen Jetta using force, but Lopez wouldn't give up his car, so the man with the gun hit him in the head with the weapon, he told police.

The would-be carjackers fled on foot. Police said the men were described as tall and in their 40s.

EMTs treated Lopez at the scene.

Police seized the victim's car for forensic evaluation.
