Police in New Haven are rewarding drivers who follow the law and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.
Police say they've seen an increase in collisions between cars and pedestrians in crosswalks lately. The initiative is part of an effort to keep everyone safe.
"I handled an accident particularly on Whalley Avenue, where someone was fatally killed," said New Haven police Sgt. Mark O'Neill.
He watched the intersection of Orange Street and Court Street for drivers who followed the law, and handed them gift cars to nearby Tikkaway Grill.
"Thank you so much! I love Tikkaway!" said one driver.
Drivers who went through the crosswalk when pedestrians were trying to cross instead received written warnings from police.
A ticket for failure to yield would have cost $92.
