Sludge from a water treatment facility in Waterbury spilled all over the northbound side of Route 8 in Torrington Thursday, closing down the highway.
Police said sludge shifted in the back of the dump truck and spilled out the back gate just after 12:30 p.m. and onto the highway and another vehicle.
A detour was set up while crews were cleaning up the sludge.
No one was injured. The driver was cited for failure to secure load and operating an unregistered commercial vehicle on a public highway.
Editor’s note: Officials originally said hot tar used for patching the road spilled from the truck.
