Teen Accused of Beating Man Up for Scooter

New Haven police arrested a 17-year-old accused of beating up a 62-year-old man for a scooter.

Police say on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. officers responded to McDonald’s on lower Whalley Avenue for reports of a man being beaten up by a group of teens. One of the suspects was reportedly trying to ride off on the victim’s scooter.

When officers neared the scene they spotted someone matching one of the suspect’s description on a blue scooter, riding down Hudson Street. Police pursued the rider, who left the scooter and tried to flee on foot. He was apprehended at Goffe Street and Crescent Street.

Meanwhile the victim was treated by firefighter-EMTs. He reported to police he was thrown to the ground by three teenage boys who kicked him in the head, and one stole the scooter. Once he was treated he identified the suspect police had in custody as one of the three involved.

The suspect, who was not publicly identified due to his age, was charged with second-degree robbery, third-degree assault, engaging police in pursuit and interfering.

The suspect was released to his grandmother on a promise to appear.
