The state medical examiner has ruled the death of a man in Torrington house fire accidental.
Douglas Welch, 55, died of smoke inhalation, according to the medical examiner.
Welch was trapped on the third floor when fire broke out in a multi-family home at 59 Pythian Avenue around 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Residents on the first and second floor escaped from the apartment building but a resident on the third floor was trapped by the flames, police said.
The fire began on the third floor in the front of the house, but investigators were not able to determine how the fire started, according to the Torrington fire marshal.
