W. Conn. Hospitals to Lay Off 60 Workers

Hospital officials would not specify which jobs will be affected.

Western Connecticut Health Network, which includes Danbury Hospital and New Milford Hospital, says it will lay off 60 employees due to the weak economy and reduced government reimbursements.

The News Times of Danbury reports that Phyllis Zappala, the network's senior vice president of human resources, would not specify the types of jobs that will be cut. She said they are not involved in direct patient care.

The job reductions represent about 1 percent of the workforce.

The health network has found other ways to cut costs in the past year. It uses its own gas-turbine plant to produce much of the hospital's energy and contracted out the food service unit at Danbury Hospital, eliminating 129 food service jobs.
