University of Virginia Reports Cyber Attack From China

    The University of Virginia says it was targeted in a cyberattack originating in China and is aiding federal authorities in an ongoing investigation.

    U.Va said in a news release Friday the attack was on its information technology systems. It says federal authorities tipped the school of the breach, identifying China as the country of origin.

    The university said no personally identifiable information such as Social Security numbers was accessed. U.Va. also says there is no evidence sensitive research material was compromised.

    U.Va. said it is working with federal authorities in an investigation.

    The university is also working to protect its information and is undergoing a security upgrade that is expected to expected to continue through Sunday evening.

    During the upgrade, many university systems will not be available, including email. First-year residence halls at U.Va. are set to open one week from Friday.
