No First Night Festivities for UConn Basketball This Year

Uconn's annual First Night basketball activities won't be happening this year.

That's because of repair work that is being done on the roof and ceiling of Gampel Pavilion.

The $10 million upgrade project began just after UConn's commencement in May and will continue until the end of October, according to the university.

The repairs will be done in time for the start of the basketball season, but not in time for First Night, a date in mid-October when the NCAA allows official basketball activities to begin.

In the past, UConn has held joint festivities with both the men's and women's teams for fans who wanted to come and watch.

Gampel was built in 1990.

The building's roof was in need of repair to replace the roof and ceiling panels, which had become worn and the exterior sealant on the dome was wearing off, leading to some leaks, UConn said.

The women's volleyball team, which also uses Gampel, will play its home games at Guyer Gym in the Hugh S Greer Field House for the fall 2017 season.
