WATCH: Will Ferrell, Red Hot Chili Peppers Drummer Chad Smith Battle in Epic Drum-Off

The two talked plenty of trash before, during and after the competition. "Do you play for the lukewarm Chili Peppers?" Ferrell said after Smith played a drum solo.

After months of trash-talking, Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith settled their rivalry with an epic drum-off on "The Tonight Show."

To give some background, the "Anchorman" comedian held a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session on February 4. While chatting with fans, he acknowledged he looked a lot like the drummer.

"A lot of people think that it's me playing for the Red Hot Chili Peppers," Ferrell wrote. "But that would be an insult to Chad Smith. The truth of the matter is there is no Will Ferrell. Only Chad Smith."

He even posted a follow-up video claiming again that he was Smith.

The 52-year-old rocker responded by calling out Ferrell in an Instagram video from Funny or Die and challenged him to the drum-off. Smith also ridiculed the 46-year-old's cowbell playing, a nod to the classic "Saturday Night Live" sketch featuring the song "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by Blue Öyster Cult (which popularized the Christopher Walken line "More Cowbell").

Ferrell accepted the challenge when Smith did his own AMA. "We can do it on stage at a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert or in front of a mutually convenient public library. Your call," Ferrell wrote.

Fortunately, the two decided to make it a main event by battling it out on "The Tonight Show." When the pair walked out on the set, the crowd immediately burst out in laughter because they were wearing the exact same outfit--from the backwards cap to their socks.

"I know you guys kinda look alike, I didn't know you all dressed alike as well," Fallon joked.

The dopplegangers added a level of confusion by pretending to be each other. "[My bandmates] want me to tear this guy a new one," Ferrell said. "It's affecting our shows and the camaraderie in the band because they look back and think Will Ferrell is playing the drums."

The two finally had their drum-off, which was held for charity: Smith played on behalf of Little Kids Rock and Ferrell drummed for the charity Cancer for College.

Ferrell's drumming was actually performed by Questlove, according to Rolling Stone. However, the two put on a show with Smith's astounding percussion moves and Ferrell's quips (at one point the comedian said, "That was cute. Do you play for the lukewarm Chili Peppers?").

Ferrell was ultimately crowned the winner and given the trophy of a golden cowbell, but it was apparent who could really play the drums. Eventually the two were joined on the stage by the rest of the Red Hot Chili Peppers who covered "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," accompanied by Ferrell and his cowbell.

Funny or Die posted this Instagram video after the battle aired.

Although the two settled their disagreement, it looks like there might be another imposter scandal on the horizon. Amanda Seyfried was also a guest, who brought along her boyfriend actor Justin Long. He apparently ran into Red Hot Chili Peppers' frontman Anthony Kiedis, and the two noticed they also look alike.
