A soldier from Granby has been killed in action.

Army Specialist Richard Emmons III was killed Tuesday, when his unit was attacked by a rocket propelled grenade in Logar province, Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.

Emmons, 22, enlisted in the Army in 2009.  He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in October 2010, according to the U.S. Army.

His awards and decorations included the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, The Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal and the Combat Action Badge.

Emmons' body was expected to arrive at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware Thursday.

Gov. Dannel Malloy ordered flags to fly at half staff to honor Emmons. They will remain that way until Emmons' burial.  Arrangements for his funeral have not been announced.
