Controversy Over Cedar Mountain Development

Newington Nature Lovers Fight Builder's Proposal

A proposal is on the table in Newington to build condos on Cedar Mountain.  The developer Toll Brothers wants to build on the 28-acre parcel of land.  Before that can happen though, the town must change the zoning from commercial to residential.

On Wednesday night, the planning and zoning commission met to discuss the zoning issue.  One of the groups fighting the change is the Connecticut Humane Society.  Its headquarters borders the property.

“We have enough development in Newington and we don’t need this open space developed with multiple town homes,” said Richard Johnston, the president of the Connecticut Humane Society.

Toll Brothers says the proposed project would be similar to their Newington Ridge Development on the Berlin Turnpike.  Many nature lovers are upset about the proposal and attended the meeting to speak against it.

“There’s a lot of wildlife out here.  There are raccoons, turtles, coyotes and tons of birds.  You can also hear the birds,” said Kitty Baker of Newington.

Although a decision was not made Wednesday night, commissioners heard from both sides, even though Toll Brothers had no comment for NBC Connecticut.

“We want to make sure we get the information we need before we make a decision,” said Cathy Hall, a planning and zoning commissioner.

Commissioners will discuss the zoning issue at their next meeting in 2 weeks.
