Memorial This Week for Elderly Man Killed in Attack

James Joseph Sr. died on Thursday afternoon.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday for a 70-year-old man who was violently assaulted at his New Britain home last Sunday.

James Joseph Sr. was found inside 548 South Main St. just before 8 a.m. on May 13, police said.

His family said he was returning from the Valero gas station, where he fills up every Sunday.

He was taken to Hartford Hospital, where he died on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Police are calling Joseph's death a homicide and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of Joseph's death.

Joseph's son previously said he thinks his father was targeted.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at South Church, 90 Main Street, New Britain.

Joseph was in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Vietnam Conflict. A burial with military honors will follow in Fairview Cemetery, New Britain. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to South Church or to a charity of the donor's choice. The Carlson Funeral Home in New Britain is assisting the family with arrangements.

No arrests have been made.

Residents who observed any activity in the vicinity of 548 South Main St. between 6:45 a.m and 7:45 a.m are asked to call the New Britain Police Department at 860-826-3135.
