Cheating Scandal May Cost Principal, Teacher Their Jobs: Report

The two women face disciplinary action following an alleged cheating scandal.

Waterbury's school superintendent has launched an effort to fire the principal of Hopeville Elementary School, along with a reading teacher, the Republican-American reports.

Superintendent David Snead on Wednesday began the formal and lengthy process of firing Hopeville Principal Maria Moulthrop and Margaret Perugini, the paper reports. Both have denied wrongdoing in the test cheating scandal.

The two educators were among 17 Hopeville staff placed on paid leave last month after the school reported dramatic improvements in scores on last spring's Connecticut Mastery Test. Students are retaking the test this week.

A report commissioned by state education officials says students were improperly coached to change wrong answers on the tests and alleges Moulthrop and Perugini were leaders of the effort.
