Jerry Glanville Takes Over Colonials

Hartford's UFL team gets one of NFL's most colorful characters.

One of the NFL's most colorful and outspoken former coaches is taking the helm for the Hartford Colonials next season.

Jerry Glanville has signed on to be the team's Head Coach and General Manager in 2011. The team introduced Glanville Monday. "I am already fired up by the excitement of coaching new players in a new city," Glanville said.

As Head Coach of the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons, Glanville would leave two tickets at will call each game for Elvis. The tickets, as you would assume, were never picked up. Glanville spent two decade in the NFL until he moved over to broadcasting and then back to coaching college football until 2009.

"We have brought a proven winner and a colorful person to Hartford and he is certain to excite and entertain our fans," said Colonials owner Bill Mayer. "His enthusiasm not only for the game, but also for what we are trying to achieve in Hartford and with the UFL is infectious."

The United Football League began play in 2009, and the Hartford Colonials joined the league in 2010. It's made up of five teams, including the Colonials, Las Vegas Locos, Sacramento Mountain Lions, Omaha Nighthawks and Virginia Destroyers.

Glanville replaces Chris Palmer, who was hired as Offensive Coordinator for the Tennessee Titans in February.

The Colonials play home games at Rentschler Field. The team finished its first season with a 3-5 record. Glanville hopes to turn that around this season. "There will be a little or no sleep as we evaluate players, prepare for open tryouts and install our game plan. Everything is about to change," he said.

The Colonials kick off their second season in September.
