Police have charged a West Hartford pain management doctor with second-degree manslaughter in the death of a patient who overdosed on medication he prescribed.

Waterbury police say they began investigating Ven Hsu, 67, after a 35-year-old female patient died in Waterbury in April 2009 after overdosing on prescription drugs.

Investigators determined that Hsu over-prescribed pain medications and muscle relaxers, police said.

Department of Public Health officials said Hsu is licensed and has no past disciplinary action.

He was also charged with illegally supplying drugs.

Hsu posted $75,000 bail and is to be arraigned Aug. 3 in Waterbury Superior Court.

It is not known if he has a lawyer. A woman who answered the phone at Hsu's office said he would not comment.
