Runner Fatally Struck By Snow Plow in Torrington

A 25-year-old runner has died after being struck by a snow plow in Torrington, according to police.

Michael Walsh, of Torrington, was jogging along the road when a city plow truck struck him near 95 South Main St. around 5:15 a.m., causing serious injuries, police said. The truck was headed in the southbound direction at the time of the accident near Bank of Americaand the road has since been closed as police investigate.

The road was slushy and icy and fog limited visibility at the time of the crash, but it's unclear if weather was a factor in the accident, according to police.

"He came out into the travel lane to avoid some of the snow and ice that was built up in the road to avoid the plow," Torrington Police Sgt. Greg Wityak said.

The area is a popular spot for runners, according to Torrington resident Frazer Pearson. There is a park nearby and the location is well-lit,Wityak said.

"It's a sad thing that happened," Pearson said. "I hate to see that happen to anybody."

The victim was transported to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, where he was pronounced dead. The plow driver was also taken to the hospital.

The plow on the truck was not down at the time of the accident because the truck was on a state road, where only state vehicles are allowed to plow. The driver of the truck is cooperating with the investigation.

The road remains closed as an accident reconstruction team investigates.State police and a truck inspection unit also responded.

No arrests have been made at this time. The crash remains under investigation.
