State Funds $10 Million in Affordable Housing Projects

Gov. Dannel Malloy announced today that the state is awarding more than $10 million in grants and loans to fund eight projects and programs for affordable housing throughout the state.

Projects will be funded through the state’s Affordable Housing Program and will create 131 units of affordable housing.

The money can be put towards many activities, including new construction, rehabilitation, demolition and the redevelopment of vacant properties.

According to a press release from the state, eight recipients were chosen through the Department of Housing’s Special Priority Projects and Program NOFA and will collectively receive $10,649,077.

The Chrysalis Center in Hartford will receive a $2,976,000 loan to be put toward the Legion Court Veterans Housing project, which will contain 12 new housing units for families of homeless veterans.

New Milford’s Brookside Commons will receive a $1,998,597 loan to tear down an abandoned commercial laundry building and construct a 12-unit housing development.

Mutual Housing Association of Southwest Connecticut will receive a $1,187,000 loan to construct the second phase of Fairfield Commons in Stamford. The first phase will be completed in the fall with six units, and the development will have 12 units of supported housing after the second phase.

Also in Stamford, the Shelter for the Homeless will receive a loan of $1,460,480 to rehabilitate properties in the city’s west end to develop 31 enhanced single-room units and one efficiency apartment for homeless people with low incomes.

ComCap in Bridgeport will be awarded $1 million to develop and preserve affordable multi-family rental housing for low- and moderate-income families.

The Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity will receive a $1.5 million grant to create owner-occupied homes in Hartford, New Britain and East Hartford.

A $375,000 grant will be given to the Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut to finance 10 units of housing and expand its affordable homeownership program in eastern Connecticut.

The Connecticut Housing Coalition is receiving a $197,000 grant to deliver a second Affordable Housing Academy to provide housing development teams with knowledge, tools and project assistance for future housing projects.
