State Trooper Injured in Crash During Police Chase on I-95: State Police

A Connecticut State Police trooper suffered minor injuries in a crash during a police pursuit involving a fugitive wanted in multiple states that ended on Interstate 95 in Old Saybrook Wednesday afternoon.

State police said the chase began when officers spotted a red Peterbilt tractor driven by 53-year-old Michael Salvaggi. Salvaggi, a Pennsylvania resident, is wanted on multiple arrest warrants from multiple states, according to police.

According to police, Old Saybrook officers tried to pull Salvaggi over, but he fled, driving onto I-95 southbound. State police joined the chase. Police said the crash happened when Salvaggi purposely swerved right and rammed a state police cruiser.

The trooper suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for evaluation, police said.

Police deployed stop sticks to stop Salvaggi’s vehicle. He was taken into custody after a brief pursuit. He was charged with engaging in a pursuit, reckless driving, interfering with police, assault on a police officer, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. He was also charged as a fugitive from justice.

He was held on a $1 million bond and is due in court Thursday.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken into custody.
