Five seriously injured after Jeep crashes into bagel shop in Wallingford

NBC Universal, Inc.

Five people were injured seriously when a Jeep crashed into the Bruegger's Bagels in Wallingford Friday morning.

Police said an employee called 911 at 9:48 a.m. after a driver in a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Hybrid crashed into the restaurant at 970 North Colony Road.

The five people who are injured are men who were in the dining area, police said. Some were sitting inside and eating while others were in line.

“A customer was driving in to pick up her order and unfortunately [we] don’t know exactly what happened to the automobile and why it accelerated the way it did,” Wallingford Public Information Officer Alex Torres said. “It’s still under investigation, but it seems like it was some trouble with the accelerator.”

The SUV came to a stop in the middle of the shop, pressed up against a booth. The front doors were resting on top of the vehicle.

Officers said those injured do not have life-threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital.

“This is a frightening situation. Everybody is not guarded at this time, you’re coming in for just a coffee, a sandwich, a bagel, and this is something very unexpected,” Torres said.

No employees were injured.

The 63-year-old woman who was driving the Jeep is being cooperative with police. She was not injured in the crash.

The Wallingford Police Traffic Division is handling the investigation.
