Former GAO Chief Considering U.S. Senate Run

David Walker spoke with NBC's Chuck Todd today.

The man who ran the General Accounting Office under presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush might be considering a run to represent Connecticut in the U.S. Senate.

“People have been asking me to run for office for many years and I'm thinking about it,” David Walker, the former comptroller general, told Chuck Todd on the Daily Rundown on Thursday. “I don't feel compelled to run but I'm considering it.”

The 2012 race for U.S. Senate is heating up and it will be an open seat because Independent Sen. Joseph Lieberman is not running for re-election.

U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy and former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz have thrown their names in as a Democratic candidates.

Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon has not announced, but there is speculation that she will run for the Republican nomination after becoming a household name during her last run for Senate.Former Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat. won that race.

Chuck Todd asked Walker if his run would be for the U.S. Senate seat in Connecticut. Walker did not come right out and say it, but did imply that he might enter the race.

“I wouldn't be interested in anything other than the Senate, and I live in Connecticut,” Walker said. He lives in Bridgeport, according to his biography on the Comeback America Initiative Web site.

The majority of Walker’s interview with Todd was about the U.S. economy and the size of government and Walker blamed both parties for government ballooning in size. So, it raised the question of what party he would run in.

National Journal reports that a Republican “official familiar with recruitment conversations” said Walker had recently met with and had phone calls with GOP party leaders in Connecticut and the response “was encouraging.”

NBC Connecticut has left a message with the state party about whether Walker is a potential GOP candidate but there was no immediate answer.

Walker served as Comptroller General from 1998 to 2008. He is now runs the Comeback America Initiative, an organization focused on promoting fiscal responsibility.
