With everyone trying to lead greener lifestyles these days to help the planet, here's a simple way to help out. Skip the supermarket this summer and get your produce, and everything else for that matter, from a farmers market.

I admit, having lived in this state all my life, I have never been to a farmers market. Having said that, I was shocked to learn that there is one in virtually every town and city in Connecticut with products from more 4,000 farms statewide. Yeah, I don't get out that much.

Farmers markets offer everything from vegetables and fruits to flowers, meat, dairy and even seafood.

On Thursday, the farmers market at Billings Forge on Broad Street in Hartford opened for its third season. It will be open every Thursday from 11a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through October.

You can even find Italian Ices, coffee, soaps and crafts.

If you don't want to make the drive into Hartford, check out a list of local farmers markets near you. So be eco-friendly and eat up.
