If students are not feeling creative a new New Haven school, it’s not because of their surroundings.
A swanky new $70 million state-of-the-art Cooperative Arts and Humanities Magnet High School opened its doors in Downtown New Haven on Tuesday morning to nearly 450 students.
The school offers everything a student could need to test their creative abilities.
The lower level, first and second floors of the 140,000 square foot school include:
- 350-seat multi-purpose theater
- Black-box theater
- Scene shop
- 80-seat lecture/film viewing hall
- Two dance studios
- 2D and 3D arts studios
- Creative writing labs
- A video production studio
- Choral and instrumental rehearsal spaces
- Photography lab
- Seminar rooms
- Cafeteria
- Library
- Gymnasium
The top two floors include other academic classrooms.
"We have waited a long time for this new school, which will enhance the co-op students' academic and arts experiences," said Reginald Mayo, superintendent of schools. "And all the arts institutions and non-profits are excited about partnering with us and using the top-notch facility.”
Co-op is one of two New Haven high schools and 16 Connecticut high schools to receive a "silver" designation as one of the nation's top high schools in last month's U.S. News & World Report annual analysis.
“We have great expectations for Co-op and appreciate the tremendous support we have received from the community," Mayo said.
